Taking Eye Photos

Monitoring your pet’s progress through medication or after surgery can be challenging, and we sometimes ask clients to email us images of the eye or eyes, so that we can see if there are any changes that are not helpful / reassure worried clients. It can be very difficult to get a good image of an eye, and we hope that this helps you to obtain clearer images, so that our vets can advise you and understand what you are seeing at home.

1: Firstly, ensure the area you are taking the photo is bright / well lit. Dim photos often hide issues and make photos harder to interpret. Flash on cameras can also cause issues, so make sure there is plenty of sunlight or an overhead diffuse light is above the pet.

2: Have someone hold your pet for you - it's almost impossible to hold an animal and take a clear and close up photo. If your assistant can hold the pet's head still and leave you to take a good, close up image of the eye(s), you will have a greater chance of sending us a photo that we can advise on.

3: Ask your assistant to angle the pet's head upwards (towards the light) and gently pull the eyelids open, to avoid them partially closing the eye obscuring the globe itself. Depending on where the focus of attention is (e.g. the cornea / eye itself, or the eyelids) ensure the area of concern is centralised in your image.

4: Take the photo as close to the eye as possible, but ensuring there is no blurring of the image. The clearer and sharper the image, the more useful it is in establishing if the pet has a problem, and the better the advice we can give you.

As can be seen here - the left eye is quite easy to view and the right in shadow, so less clear. Photograph each eye individually if at all possible.

If you have to photograph both eyes at the same time, this is a better image.

This is a perfect image of an eye - the cornea can clearly be seen, as well as the eyelids so any issues can be identified.
